The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is the main discussion forum within the UN. The UNGA is organised into six main committees, each focusing on different subject areas. The First Committee deals specifically with issues relating to international peace and security.

In 2009 the First Committee took place at the UN in New York under the Chairmanship of José Luis Cancela, Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the UN.

A total of 50 resolutions and five decisions were tabled. After voting has taken place in the First Committee the draft resolutions go to a second and final vote within the General Assembly, normally held in December of each session.
